By Road
We are around 40 mins. from the M6. Leave the M6 at junction 36 following the A590 for Barrow-in-Furness (There is a turn off to the left after a few miles so watch for signs). Continue on this road through Ulverston, Swarthmoor and Lindal. At the next two roundabouts bear right for A595 Whitehaven/Workington. Continue on this road through Askam, Ireleth and Soutergate to the crossroads in the centre of Kirkby. At the crossroads (Burlington Inn and Moorland Stores on the corners) turn left for the railway station. We are at the bottom of the hill.
By Train
We are on the very scenic Cumbrian Coastal Line which runs from Barrow-in-Furness to Carlisle, so catch a train to either of these. There are no trains on Sundays. Kirkby is a request stop so make sure the conductor knows you want to get off! The pub is opposite the station. Tel. 08457 48 49 50
By Bus
There is a regular bus service from Barrow-in-Furness and Millom, and less so from Ulverston. Tel. 0870 608 2 608
On Foot
For those coming from the Walkers’ Hostel in Ulverston. Leave Ulverston via Daltongate which runs from the market cross between The Bradylls and The Farmers. Take the first right turn into Stockbridge Lane, past the car parks, and continue on this road across Kirkby Moor. You will eventually drop down into Beckside, Kirkby, arriving at a T junction. Turn left and walk down past the church and the park, to the crossroads in the centre of the village where you will find The Moorland Stores and The Burlington Inn.. Cross the main road and head down the hill to the railway station. We are at the bottom of the hill.
For those coming from the YHA hostel in Millom, By road, you will enter Kirkby from the north. Walk straight on into the centre of the village and turn right at the crossroads.
We do not advise you to take the footpaths across the sands from Millom as the tides and sinking sands can be deadly.
